The Arts in the Community @ Ang Mo Kio Central Stage (18th May)

 Before the actual start of the event at 5.30pm, curious passerby were already visiting our booth like bees attracted to honey!

 Thinking back, the students did a good job  by hanging their drawing on pegs which are visually striking and also complement the words "Cartoon Caricature".

 Real live drawing on the spot! Drawing in class and on the spot is not the same. You do not know who your audiences will be and what what challenges you will face. For example, Alden were asked to draw four person (a family) on one sheet of paper instead of one caricature per paper.

I was really AMAZED by the performance of this group of students I have taught. They only went through six hours of training and classroom simulation of the event is no way near to what you see on the actual day, and there is little you can deliver that experiences in classroom due to many physical limitation. We were given a booth (two tables actual) and there are at least ten students tending the booth (some will be doing caricature and the rest will be printing bookmarks, not forgetting the audiences), together with the art materials taking spaces on the table. It was really messy (if you observe the photos carefully ) at first (actually till the end of the event) but because of this, you get to see leadership qualities in some of the students who really give "commands" to improve the situation. Not only that, they physically engaged the audiences by asking them if they want their caricature to be drawn and how they want their bookmarks to be done. When they realised that audiences do not know what they will be expecting, the students adapted and responses by asking for backups to create more samples to be attached for display! Finally when there are too many people and not enough spaces to draw caricature on the table, the students pull out the chair or stand and draw their audiences. What they did are indeed very focus and professional! My conclusion is I felt that I was just like another audience impressed by the spirit of the students. It is worth teaching this group of students!

Cartoon Caricature for Mayflower Primary (Training)

 

These are a group of students that are chosen to draw cartoon caricature at a community art event organised by Mayflower Primary School. I was given 6 sessions (6 hours) to train them to be competent and confident for the actual event which will take place in May 18 at Ang Mo Kio Central Stage. Beside drawing cartoon caricature, the students will also have to make a bookmark together with the public as a form of community art making spirit. I was told that Mr Seng Han Thong (MP) will be the guest of honour for the event and thus I need to prepare the students to draw him and choose a representative to deliver a cartoon caricature of Mr Seng as a gift.
